Gray skies are gonna clear up...

...put on a happy face!

It rained all day yesterday - which I know we needed - but I am looking forward to seeing the beautiful blue sky today and having less humidity!

Today we have our first day of our homeschool co-op. I'm nervous. Why? I have no idea! I wasn't originally planning to join this early in our homeschool journey - but T thought it would be a great opportunity for me to meet some like-minded moms and have some much needed social time (does he realize that I blog?) LOL

Quintin is very excited about it. Colin will be in the nursery, Elle will be in a class for 2s and 3s and Quintin will have 3 classes. Art, Music/Show & Tell, and Phys Ed. He asked me what Phys Ed was (Apparently, I'm not doing my job - my own child doesn't know what PE is - he even spent the final year I taught in utero - was he not listening?) :D

I told him it was like gym (thinking he may have heard this term before). He confused it with a TV show. Then I told him he'll get to move, dance and learn some sport skills (this he could relate too).

For Show & Tell, he needs to take something to tell about his family. I suggested a picture of us and then he started planning. After supper last night, he gathered us in the family room and said he needed to take a picture. I figured I'd hold the camera and snap a shot of us all together. He insisted that he not be in it.

I don't know why I like this picture so much. Is it because Daddy is between a blink and looks oh so tired (which he is)? Or, because it looks like Colin is encouraging Daddy that everything is okay? Or, because Elle has a big dimple in her cheek? I don't know which - but I wish the photographer was in it.

After Quintin took the picture, I asked him why he didn't want to be in it. He answered, "Because I'll be in my class - I'm taking all of you with me!"

Here's to a fun first day at co-op!

Tiny Talk Tuesday

Mary @notbefore7 is hosting Tiny Talk Tuesday. Head on over to her blog to read what more tiny ones are saying!

******************************
Quintin has just begun naming more rhyming words. So, this is a typical conversation
at our house right now.

Q: Train, mane, plane...all rhyme.

E: Riley, baby food and pickle...all rhyme.

(I figure she's got a few years to pick it up!!)

Quintin is still enjoying his bow and the book it came from.

Elle was looking through the book the other day and Quintin said, "Elle, be careful, that book is dangerous!"

Go*oey gunk...Glasses...Really?

~Go*oey Gunk~

On Friday, the kids and I made some more gooey gunk (what I had made with my nephew last week.) It is some rather weird stuff - but the kids are enjoying it!

Solution A:
mix the following in a bowl:
1 c water
1 c white glue
7-10 drops food coloring

Solution B:
in a second bowl, mix the following until completely dissolved:
1 1/3 c warm water
4 tsp borax laundry booster

Slowly pour solution A into solution B.

DO NOT MIX!!!!

Roll solution A around in solution B 4-5 times.
My photographer capturing our assistant at her best!!!
Lift solution A out of solution B.
Knead for 2-3 minutes.

Store gunk in an airtight container or plastic zip lock bag.
It goes from this shape....
...to this!
It really has a different feel to it. Let us know if you make some!

~Glasses~
I felt it was time to update my glasses. So, last week at my eye dr appt, I chose a new pair of frames. What do you think?

The old pair

The new pair

~Really?~

Ginger had a post about people looking like their pets. Here's Riley, our bichon frise. Do we look alike? Maybe back in HS with my 90s perms!!

Labor Day Weekend Pictures

T's brother and his family are on the left - they have 2 boys and 2 girls. T's parents are sitting on the steps. We are behind his parents. Next to his parents are T's sister's children. She has the red hair - she and her hubby have 5 children. They are each holding one of the twins - they will be 2 next month. On the far right is T's other sister, and her hubby and 3 daughters. They have another daughter who is 18 and doesn't live at home. She was adopted as was T's brother's youngest daughter - in the yellow shirt on the left. We are a big group to squeeze into a cabin with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms!!!

*************************************
I forgot to take my camera to my parent's house for our picnic - I did take some pictures on my dad's camera, but forgot to get them from him. :( I had some great ones of my niece playing with Colin and my dad swinging on his hammock with the older two.

This is my nephew, on Tuesday, with Quintin's bow and arrow.

Quintin is loving the bow I made him - it isn't anything grand, but it doesn't hurt his hand like the red one he has. Yesterday, he told me he didn't like it anymore and when I asked why, he said because he couldn't find it when he shot it into the woods behind the house. So, he painted the arrow orange yesterday afternoon!!

Target practice:
**I need to acknowledge T's sister T who emailed me some of her photos from the weekend!!

Super Pumped

Myrna @ Cherish the Word...is leading a Beth Moore Bible Study - A Woman's Heart - this Fall and I am really excited about it, and here's why:

1) I've never done a bible study with Beth (or Myrna, lol) before
2) I won one of the books in Myrna's giveaway!! WooHoo
3) I don't have to pack up 3 children or find a sitter to participate!
4) I know I'm gonna grow, GRow, GROW!

Here's a little from Myrna's description:
"This study is about the tabernacle and the importance of it as God's Dwelling
place. BUT--It is a whole lot more than that. If you have studied with Beth
before, you know that she will lead you on a treasure hunt of the scriptures.
She will show us, through the study of the tabernacle, how God wants to live
with us and talk with us. In addition, she will show us through scripture how
His plan for dwelling with us has been, and will continue to be, in place for
eternity. Friends, this is POWERFUL!"

Ladies, if you are interested in getting in on this study, head over to Myrna's!

What a weekend!

I hope everyone had a great weekend - It feels like forever since I've visited everyone.

We had planned to leave Friday late afternoon/evening to head to my in-law's cabin for the weekend. Our plans kept changing and I soon didn't know which end was up. We finally left Saturday morning. We had planned to leave at 6:30 and I think that is about when we finally woke up!

It was about a 3 hour drive and we did stop for some breakfast Saturday morning. We arrived just before lunch. It was T's parents, T's brother and wife and their 4 children, T's oldest sister and husband and 3 of their children, T's other sister and her hubby and 5 children. Their cabin is in north-central PA and we were about 10 miles away from the NY line. It was a beautiful weekend to be up and I hope to share pictures soon.

T and Quintin went fishing several times, Quintin played tag in the woods with his cousins and dipped around in the creek behind the cabin. Elle and Colin missed out on some fun times, but they will enjoy it in a few years - naps are still a must for them (and momma!)

We came home Sunday evening and it was wonderful to sleep at home. Monday we worked to get some things done around the house - clean the very dirty truck, mow lawn, unpack and do laundry. We then had a picnic with my family - my parents, my brother, his wife and 2 children and my sister, her husband and their son.

T had to head out around 9:30 last night to drive truck to NJ. He usually gets home around 3, but this morning he came in around 6. He runs with another truck and the other truck ran out of fuel. T would only have been coming home to go to bed, but the other driver had to make another run - so T waited at the truck until a mechanic could come with fuel so he could drive home.

Almost an hour later, my niece and nephew came for the day. They start school tomorrow and my sister-in-law teaches at another school that started last week.

For some reason, I'm not able to babysit without turning it into a PE class. My nephew, who is 8, learned to shoot bow and arrow, cast with a fishing pole and my niece, 5, was working at riding her bike without training wheels.

My nephew and I also made gooey gunk. I want to make it with Quintin some time this week, so we'll post the recipe as well as pictures later.

We attempted to make our own bow and arrow following the directions in The Dangerous Book for Boys, but we couldn't find a good stick that would bend - everything kept breaking. Then I remembered I had thin elastic string and we used that to make a bow and arrow. The bow and arrow that my nephew used was given to us by T's brother. Quintin likes to play with it, but he is so much more excited about using the one we made. What a day!

I had hoped to do some school time with the children yesterday, but now I'm two days behind - oh well, I think with everything the children did these past 4 days, any attempt at school would have been wasted. I know they learned all kinds of new things being with their cousins these past few days. I wouldn't trade that time in for anything!! Having no cousins growing up, I feel we are tremendously blessed with 13 cousins on one side and 3 on the other!!

200th post

This is my 200th post, didn't I just write my 100th? Wow! I want to wish each of you a great holiday weekend. We're spending some time with family this weekend.

I found this quote by Patsy Clairmont in my Women of Faith Devotional Bible. I took the picture in early summer and had been waiting to find some words to go with it!

In her own words

Some posts this week have really made me think and reflect and I'm finally able to put my thoughts into words.

There have been some posts, videos and pictures these last several days/weeks about the first days back to school and I'm tellin' ya gals, I'm crying right along with you.

And, there have really been some great posts about each family's homeschool - especially while browsing the Homeschool Open House that Tiany hosted.

Its enjoyable to me to read both sides. Why? Because I've been on both sides. Honestly, sometimes I still battle which side to be on. Am I doing what is best for my children? Are they going to miss out on something? I ask myself these questions time and time again. But you know what? You know how I know which side to be on? When I draw close to our Lord, through reading His Word and seeking Him in prayer and quiet time, I hear Him. I, along with T, know He is calling us to this task. And, while He calls some to be missionaries in far away lands, or to minister in prisons, to adopt babies from a distant land...I know my call is to keep our little ones at home, in this season, and homeschool. And those "battles" always come at a time when I've been distant to God - when I haven't made time with Him a priority.

I can look back at my years leading up to this and see God's hand totally in it. Not that I never thought it was there in the first place, but it is so clear to see now how He completely orchestrated all of it. From the teaching degree to the 5 years teaching experience. The first year was at the YMCA, which I've blogged about before - but this was a pivotal year. Not only did I run a homeschool co-op offering art, pe and swimming, but I met a wonderful group of young adults from a local private christian school - I was their PE teacher, but let me tell you - they taught me so much that year. It was that experience with those students, that stirred a desire within me. Knowing their school was too far away to send our children there, I knew the Lord could help me 'create' that at home.

God calls us each to different things and I think we can only bring Him the most glory by doing what He calls us to, to the best of our abilities. As it says in 1 Corinthians 12:12, "The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one one body. So it is with Christ." He calls us each to be different parts - and we must do our part with all the gusto we've got!

Those of you sending your children into the school system, may God bless them and assist them in being the light in a dark world. To those homeschooling, may God bless our children and our efforts to help them become the people He desires them to become.

Awards

Morning Glory shared these words on her blog after being nominated for a bloggy award,

"Who doesn't like to be considered "cool", regardless of your age? Who doesn't appreciate a little bloggy award? Well, I think they're fun, and I really try to keep from getting an overblown ego when they come my way. But in all honesty, we all put a lot of work into pouring our hearts and humor out in these posts and when someone lets you know you're appreciated, well.....it's nice."
I totally agree with her and I asked her if I may share her words with you (she said yes, in case you were wondering).

Quoting (and then adapting it a little) Jill at Who Could Ask for Anything More?, "I've been a bad blogger lately. Not bad as in...not blogging.Bad as in....not thanking those of you who have awarded me and named me. That's the equivalent of getting a message from an in-real-life girlfriend to go eat tacos Lil' Debbie Swiss Rolls and drink margaritas pepsi, and not returning the call."

With no further ado:

Reflection Award (Thank you Susan at Penless Writer, Amber at Trust in the Lord and Mary at Notbefore7.)

Thinking Blogger Award (Thank you MorningSong)

Nice Matters (Thank you Susan at Learning for Lifetime)

Thoughtful Blogger (Thank you WeaverMom)

I agree with Morning Glory that we all do put a lot of ourselves into our blog and when recognized, it is really nice. I want to recognize some blogs, that I'd like to pass these along to.
After yesterday's posts at these 2 blogs, I am passing the Reflection Award to: Just Mom's Musings and MorningSong. Both of these posts just said what I was thinking...only better!!

And another post yesterday, at Mary's, really made me think about how I want my children to be portrayed to my family and friends but also on my blog. This post just hit home in my heart.

I'm passing the Thoughtful Blogger award to everyone who stops by and visits with me by leaving a comment to let me know you were here!

And, passing along the Nice Matters award to those who read. You know who you are...first, you are the ones lurking, you haven't left a comment. Step forward and take this award to pass along to your fellow bloggers - please leave me a comment and let me know you were here! And, second, you are the ones who don't have a blog but read and don't comment - there's a place for you to comment - don't by shy! Let me know you're here too!!

There are so many of you that leave me thinking and reflecting on your posts and there are so many thoughtful and nice bloggers/lurkers out there - I wanna pass along an award to everyone!!

Tiny Talk Tuesday

Mary at NotBefore7 is hosting Tiny Talk Tuesday. Thanks for hosting this Mary - please head over to her great blog to see more TTT participants!

I've decided to try blogger's new option to 'add video' just like 'add photo.' Way to go blogger! Now we don't have to have our videos stored at yo*t*be. **update below**

Now, for your viewing pleasure - Elle singing "fifuu of ma" (fishers of men and feel free to insert pancakes in there when you hear her).

Actually, the first one is "My cup is full and running over. Since the Lord saved me, I'm as happy as can be, my cup is full and running over." (I think the actual lyrics are since the Lord loves me, but this is how it is sung in our house - I'm not sure what happened). You'll hear big brother helping out too!!

Then, "Deep and wide, deep and wide, there's a fountain flowing deep and wide."

With the grand finale of "I will make you fishers of men if you follow me."

At the end, she asks to see her two songs - just in case you couldn't understand it - but I don't know why you couldn't! ;-)

Happy Tuesday! Thanks for listening to my tiny ones talk!

(UPDATE - after trying blogger's 'upload video' option and letting it run for 7 hours overnight, I decided to go back to YT. Hopefully blogger can get its bugs worked out!! And, then the rest of you can vlog right alongside Ginger, Kerrie, Tracy and me!)

My angel

This past Friday I did a Show and Tell about my angels I have in my home. You can click here to read it if you missed it.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to the angel that saved my life. I guess I can't really introduce him, because I don’t know his name or much about him. But I know he was there, that mildly warm November day. So, I'd like to write about what he did for me.

It was 1998, and T and I had been married for 2 years. I was leaving home, heading to school about 20 minutes away. T happened to be leaving at the same time that morning, so I followed him out of the driveway down the main road that leads past his parents’ house and gets us both to work. At the third stop sign, just before his parents’ house – something happened. Something I will never forget.

I was driving T’s first car – you know, the first one that you can call yours? It was a 1990 Acura Integra – shiny red! This picture was taken by T in 1995 at his parents’ house shortly after washing and waxing it. And it was actually my first car, too.

It was November 24, I remember the date because it is also the day of my brother-in-law's birthday. T crossed through the 2-way stop intersection and then it was my turn. As I looked both ways, several times in fact because it was a bit of a hard turn to see around, I put the car into first gear and pulled away from the stop sign.

All I can remember is hearing an extremely loud noise and yelling out T’s name. I remember smelling something strange, too. Since, I've learned that it was the smell of tires burning. I did not see the oncoming pickup truck. It hit my car on the passenger side and pushed me into a telephone pole. I blacked out and awoke on the shoulder of the road pushed up against the pole. I could reach out and touch my passenger door – it had been pushed in and the passenger seat was behind me. The driver of the other vehicle came up to me and I remember just saying sorry, over and over.

T was down the road about ½ a mile waiting on his parent’s driveway to wave to me as I went past. He had stopped to pick up the newspaper for his mom, since his dad was away hunting. Knowing I had been right behind him, he got concerned and walked off the driveway, onto the road to look for me. Their house sits back a little bit and there is an S turn right before their house, so he couldn’t see the intersection from their driveway. What he saw where cars crossing the intersection slowly and the hint of a red car in the field.

He ran inside to tell his mom and he hopped in the truck. I can still remember his blue pickup truck driving towards me and my thoughts of “Oh man, he’s not going to be happy with what I’ve done to his car.”

I was still in the car when he reached me because the seat belt would not release me. It was the type of seat belt that buckled you in when the car door closed. I was able to release the lap portion of the belt, but I couldn’t get out. I can also remember the feel of something cold and wet running down the side of my face.

I remember my eyes locking with T’s and being concerned about what he would say. He reached the car as I was wiping my forehead. He told me to stop because I was bleeding. I didn’t even know, nor did I realize I had glass in my skin. The first thing out of my mouth, after apologizing was "Call my school. Let them know I may be a little late.”

Minutes passed feeling like hours. The ambulance came and I remember them talking about using the Jaws of Life to get me out. I thought what? Just open the window, I’ll climb out. I even attempted to get out myself and they told me to stop. I was put into the ambulance and we were on our way. To this day, I still jump when I hear sirens – I feel for the person inside and say a prayer, because I can remember those feelings of: What happened? Why me? What is going on? Am I going to be okay?

I arrived at the hospital and they worked to get the glass out of my face and my gash stitched up. I only required about 11 stitches for a V shaped cut on my right temple.

Next they took me for an x-ray and found that my collarbone had been crushed – not just one nice clean break, but crushed. My passenger seat hit my right arm and my collarbone took the brunt of it. This was the same side as my incision – it was remarkable to me that I was reaching up to wipe the blood away and I don’t remember feeling pain in my arm or shoulder.

I stayed in the hospital for one night. My stitches came out and I have a scar that is barely visible. I wore a shoulder brace for 3 months to pull my right shoulder back to allow my collarbone to heal. Instead of looking like a nice smooth bone, my right collar bone looks like a rope with a knot in it.

Why was I spared? I’ve asked myself this many, many times since then. When I look at pictures from the accident, I feel that my angel pulled me out right out of that car. Then put me back in, with just a few scratches and a broken bone for good measure, after the car stopped. When I see how the only part of the car that was untouched is where I was sitting and the front driver's side of the car - I am amazed that I was in there.

That's T's blue truck in the background. You can see Riley at the driver's side window and me in the passenger seat.

I can’t imagine being in that car. I can’t believe T was so close when it all happened. It was rare for us to leave for work at the same time in the mornings.

My car ended up being towed to a garage just ¼ mile from our house. For the next several weeks, I could still see my car in the lot. I could see the top of the hatchback since it had popped into the air from the collision.

Almost 9 years have passed and I can so clearly see God’s hand through it all. I am amazed at how calm I was through the whole experience – I truly do not remember being in the car when it happened.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 170:1

Whatever difficulties you may confront today, remember it is God who holds you in His hands, just like He held me on that November day. His strength holds you up and enables you to face anything that comes your way.
